Focus on

Gender medicine: human male and female endothelial cells are different

Female endothelial cells produce more nitric oxide (NO) than male counterpart, and this important feature is due to the higher expression of the NO-synthesizing enzyme in female cells. The ability to generate more NO may be involved in the protection against cardiovascular diseases characterizing the young female population.

Smac127 Has Anti-Inflammatory Effects on Rheumatoid Arthritis Fibroblast

Fibroblast-like synoviocytes are apoptosis-resistant cells and contribute to the pathogenesis of RA. We evaluated the proapoptotic and anti-inflammatory activity of the Smac127 on RA-FLSs cultured in synovial fluid (SF), in order to reproduce the physiopathological environmental characteristic of RA joints. Smac127 induces apoptosis by inhibiting apoptosis proteins (IAPs).
